The circadian system has been widely overlooked in the field of developmental trauma. Yet, it not only provides basic bio-rhythmic timing cues essential for maintaining co-homeostasis but also the temporal scaffolding required for turning towards the sensory presence of connection prenatally and attachment postnatally. Could commonly described clinical problems in ‘regulation’ be underpinned by early-life disruptions in the timing system? Might difficulties in forming connection and sustaining attachment also be linked to impaired temporal integration? This workshop will explore how some clinical difficulties labelled as ‘regulatory problems’ show strong temporal-spatial features. We will also explore how the ‘pause’ offers us a gateway into restoring temporal spatial orientation by re-locating experience in time and space.
